IPSWICH, Australia (CNN) -- A family pet is now something of a hero to an Australian family after saving their two children from a snake. The mutt was bitten as it killed the snake under the children's swing.
Ben Lynch says, "She's a red dog crossed with something."
Well perhaps she's crossed with courage because on Saturday, River the 18-month-old family pet showed that in spades. Ben says, "River came bursting out and jumped on the snake."
The girls 7-year-old Michelle and 2-year-old Kaylee were heading for the swing when a 70 centimeter brown snake reared and River attacked. Mom Catherine says, "They're a pack animal and where its pack so its definitely their instinct to get in there, especially when kids are involved."
Twelve hours later River was paralyzed and they rushed her to the vet hospital for hundreds of dollars of anti-venine."
River is still on a drip at the vets... unable to eat properly yet... but it looks like with more fluid she is going to be all right.
That's great news for the Lynches. Catherine says, "Michelle loves River, River loves Michelle and Kaylee thinks that River is a fantastic toy."Ben adds, "She's a very sweet, friendly dog; she's very much part of our family."
