LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (May 4, 2012) - Summer is the most dangerous time of year for kids, according to a study released by the National Safe Kids Campaign.
The study "found that May through August account for nearly half of all injury-related childhood deaths, with July being the most deadly month."
National Safe Kids Week was started in 1988 by Safe Kids USA and Johnson & Johnson. Each year a new campaign kicks off before the start of summer to "help parents and caregivers understand a different part of childhood injury prevention."
This year's campaign focuses on sports safety.
The local Safe Kids Coalition, Safe Kids Arkansas, will be hosting an event at the Little Rock Zoo in observance of this special week.
Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. children will be able to visit various educational booths that cover different safety topics, such as home, motor vehicle, water, fire and bicycle safety.
Those children who attend all the booths will receive a FREE bicycle helmet while supplies last. The event is open to the public, but participation requires paid admission to the Little Rock Zoo.
