LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- "Sherm" is a slang term that can refer to PCP, a compound that causes delusions and irrational behavior.

The Drug Enforcement Administration says it's primarily manufactured on the West Coast and around the Washington D-C area.

But, unfortunately, that doesn't mean Arkansas is immune from its effects.

William Bryant with the Arkansas Drug Enforcement Administration describes the effects.

"Sherm is the street-slang for Phencyclidine. It's usually a marijuana cigarette dipped in liquid PCP," Bryant said. "Usually if they smoke it, it will ingest in your blood stream quicker. You will feel the high for two to five minutes. You'll have hallucinations. You'll have sort of a blank stare. You'll feel like you're invincible with superhuman strength."

Sherm was widely used in the 1970s but tapered off in the 80s and 90s. Now it's seeing resurgence.

Lt. Terry Hastings of the Little Rock Police Department says it's unclear whether sherm was involved in Friday's incident where two Little Rock teenagers were killed in a hit and run.

"The officers at the scene said that the driver appeared to be under some type of intoxication so they drew blood as we do in all these and sent it off to the crime lab," Lt. Hastings said.

The suspect, 24-year-old Kevin Shelton is charged with two counts of negligent homicide, felony fleeing and felony hit and run.

Police say he hit two 15-year-olds at a high rate of speed. Neither Blake Cooney nor Jimmy Bullock survived.

Investigators say Shelton admitted using sherm, but only lab tests will confirm that statement.

"We don't know if this young man was taking that drug, we'll wait on toxicology, but we have had other incidents. And officers know it's a very dangerous drug. It's a drug that could cause someone to be very violent," Lt. Hastings said.

It may take between 30 to 60 days for the results of the toxicology tests to come back.
