LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - The city of Little Rock files a lawsuit - claiming the Valley Heights Apartments disrupt the peace and cause a public nuisance. Little Rock Police say - it's a haven for crime.
Sheena Cleveland plans to drive far away from Valley Heights Apartments. She and her two sons spent the last seven months living in the complex, but Cleveland says she's had enough.
"Parents out here, they don't control their kids, people get into it with people, people out here shooting, selling drugs and that's basically about it," says Cleveland.
The City agrees with Cleveland's complaints and filed a lawsuit against Valley Heights claiming the activity going on causes a nuisance and deteriorates the area.
"We have had 469 calls from Valley Heights since January of last year. We're working with the city attorney in the abatement process to move forward," says Lt. Terry Hastings, LRPD.
The lawsuit says Valley Heights has been used to facilitate theft and burglary and threatens the health and safety of citizens around the property.
"The issue is criminal activity going on there and maybe coming and going. The owners and others allowing that to happen," says Hastings.
Besides crime issues at Valley Heights, there are also structural problems and trash all over the complex.
"I don't like it. I'm ready to move. I'm ready basically to just move, get my stuff, break my lease and go on home," says Cleveland.
Cleveland fears for her family and says the biggest threat comes from unsupervised teenagers.
"I mean they are just shooting over here and over there. Kids, teenagers have guns and stuff you know. Not grown people just kids," says Cleveland.
If Pulaski County Circuit Judge Collins Kilgore, rules in favor of the city, Valley Heights would be closed and evacuated.
The owner of the complex, Deming Henry, says his company has gone to great lengths to address all neighborhood and city concerns about the property, and will continue to do so. Henry goes on to say that management cannot address problems of which they are unaware.
