This month, a 9-year old boy gets the workout of a lifetime when THV's Dawn Scott introduces him to a Razorback football star.

"You're an athlete already!" exclaims former Razorback Anthony Lucas. "Miss Dawn, we got us an athlete right here!"

There was no stopping 9-year old Davonte (photo gallery) the afternoon he met former Arkansas wide receiver Anthony Lucas.

"Good job," reassures Lucas. "Balance it, balance it."

It was all work, and some play at D1 Sports in west Little Rock.

"How old are you?" asks Lucas.

    "Nine," answers Davonte.

    "I'm ten!" jokes Lucas.

    "No you're not," laughs Davonte.

This is probably the most attention Davonte's gotten from a male adult in a very long time.

"When that kid walked through the door I saw a fire in him," recalls Lucas. "Very mannerable, yes sir, yes ma'am type of kid. But I can tell he does lack a little self esteem. I guess that's from not having a mother or father figure at home."

When Lucas learned the state took custody of this young man, leaving him with no mom or dad, and that all three of his siblings had been adopted, leaving Davonte behind, he immediately stepped up and agreed to spend an afternoon with him.

"Respect, dedication, honor," reminds Lucas. "To see a kid like that who doesn't have parents, it's kinda frustrating to me."

    Davonte briefly recalls his past.

"It was kind of hard," he says. "I got a lot of whoopings (pauses) really hard."

Davonte says he refuses to give up in his search for the family he knows is out there.

"As long as I got someone who loves me and cares about me and someone who will do something with me and who will play with me sometimes and talk to me," says Davonte.

"One thing I try to instill in kids like that, don't let that be your downfall," says Lucas. "Don't use it as a crutch, use it as motivation. Say, 'hey I'm gonna grow up and be something and have a family, be there for my son or daughter.'"

This day, Lucas was there for this young man. A day and a race Davonte won't soon forget.

"Awww this kid is fast," says Lucas as he races Davonte down the field. "Come back here boy!!!!!!"

Special thanks to Anthony Lucas and D1 Sports for hosting the workout.

Davonte says it was one of the best times he's ever had.

If you'd like more information on Davonte -- or any of the children in state foster care log on to the Arkansas Department of Human Services adoption website.

There are no costs associated with adopting a child in state care.
