FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas' Gunnar Nixon is in the lead after the first day of the 2012 USA Junior Track and Field Championships in Bloomington, Ind.

Officials say Nixon posted a day-one score of 4,062 points after placing in the top five in the 100-meter, the long jump, the shot put, the high jump and the 400 meters.

Georgia's Garrett Scantling is second with 3,855 points.

The 2012 USA Junior Track and Field Championships is a showcase event for high school standouts and top college freshman. The meet will serve as a qualifier for the IAAF World Junior Championships next month in Barcelona, Spain.

The top-two finishers in each event who have met qualifying standards will be invited to compete for Team USA.
