On this Medical Monday we wanted to share a great list we found. Did you know that Ttwinkies have fewer grams of sugar than many those quote "healthy snacks" that you thought were so good for you? Here are are five "healthy foods" with more fat than a Twinkie we found in a great Yahoo! article.
1. Spaghetti sauce. There's a reason why that jar of Prego can taste as good as a home-cooked sauce. It has sugar in it -- Loads of it. To be precise, just half a cup of Prego Fresh Mushroom Italian Sauce has 11 grams of sugar -- the same amount that's in a glazed Krispy Kreme donut! An alternative is to make your own spaghetti sauce from chopped canned tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, and a little dried basil.
2. Yogurt. Yogurt might seem like the ultimate health food, but you'd be surprised by how some flavors, like the Key Lime Pie-flavored Yoplait, can be as sugar-loaded as an actual slice of pie. It has 29 grams of sugar -- that's the equivalent of nearly two Twinkies! Instead, try this -- sweeten plain Greek yogurt with a drizzle of honey and some fresh berries or sliced bananas.
3. Sports Drinks. Even if it's labeled vitamin water, an energy drink, or a sports drink -- it can still be loaded with empty, sugar-filled calories. Sports drinks like Gatorade have 28 grams of sugar per bottle. Instead -- just keep it simple and drink water.
4. Smoothies. Many of these fruity treats have 540 calories and, depending on the size -- anywhere from 40 to 110 grams of sugar!Instead, make your own smoothies at home. You'll get all the nutrients of the fruits without the added sugar.
5. Granola Bars. Unfortunately granola bars are just really healthy-sounding cookies. A Clif Bar has 24 grams of sugar -- 4 more than a twinkie! Instead eat a graham cracker with all-natural peanut butter.
