BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The Internal Revenue Service says NorthWest Arkansas Community College had a history of late penalties when the agency denied an appeal from the college last month.
The Northwest Arkansas Times (http://bit.ly/L8VJBL) reports the college was penalized $5,533 by the IRS for late payments stemming from June 30, 2011, Dec. 31 and March 31 deadlines. In April, the college appealed a $425 penalty for late payments on its Dec. 31 tax period, but IRS officials denied the waiver.
Last year, school officials paid a $27,760 fine for three late payments.
In a statement, college president Becky Paneitz apologized for the recent late payments, and said there's no reason why they shouldn't be processed in a timely manner.
Board member Alex Vasquez says the board will examine the tax payment process.
