LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (June 27, 2012) -- In response to the soaring summer temperatures, the Salvation Army in cooperation with the City of Little Rock will open its Cooling Center at 1111 West Markham from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM every day when the temperature reaches 100 degrees.
The Salvation Army needs donations of bottled water, snacks, and board games for the dozens of individuals who access our cooling center each day. We also need cash donations to cover the additional energy costs from running the air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day.
According to the National Weather Service:
Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States. The National Weather Service statistical data shows that heat causes more fatalities per year than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined. Based on the 10-year average from 2000 to 2009, excessive heat claims an average of 162 lives a year. By contrast, hurricanes killed 117; floods 65; tornadoes, 62; and lightning, 48.
