FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A Sebastian County sheriff's deputy faces three felony charges for allegedly smuggling a cellphone and other items into the county jail.

The sheriff's department says Deputy Mario Turner Rupert was arrested on Friday on three counts of furnishing prohibited articles. Sheriff's Maj. Kevin Nickson says Rupert is suspended and disciplinary proceedings have begun.

Rupert told investigators an inmate had threatened to harm his wife if he didn't bring in the items. Rupert is accused of also smuggling tobacco and a charger for the phone.

The Southwest Times Record reports the agency has been investigating contraband at the jail since March.

Rupert has a July 5 court date. No listed phone number for Rupert could be located.
