LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- The Army Corps of Engineers' Little Rock District is advising park visitors to pay close attention to heat and fire danger warnings this Independence Day.

Knowing and understanding the risks associated with your holiday plans is half the battle in preventing loss of time, money or even a life.

Wildfire danger, burn bans, severe drought, air quality alerts, and heat advisories are all factors to consider when making outdoor plans. Alerts and warnings indicate danger and should not be taken lightly.

For most of Arkansas and southern Missouri the threat is intensified by multiple warnings in each county. Multiple warnings issued for an area can create environments that are unsafe for campers or anyone outdoors, to include first responders and rescue workers.  

Risk identification and proper planning might be the key to a successful and safe holiday celebration.

And many of you will be spending your days at one of Arkansas's beautiful lakes. The Army Corps of Engineers want lake visitors to make the right choice to wear a life jacket when on or in the water.

Here are the five things to keep in mind when fitting a life jacket:

1. Check the label: it will tell you the size and how it can be used.

2. Check for Damage: check that there are no broken parts and no mold or rips in the fabric.

3. Fasten Up: Fasten all buckles zippers and straps.

4. Check for Proper Fit: make sure it does not slip above the chin or ears. It should feel snug, yet comfortable.

5. Wear it: A life jacket only works if it's worn!
