FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The University of Arkansas' chancellor is asking the Fayetteville Advertising and Promotion Commission for $1 million to help build an on-campus concert hall.
Commissioners are scheduled to discuss the request from Chancellor David Gearhart on Monday.
The Northwest Arkansas Times reports (http://is.gd/OXGqBY ) the contribution would come from the commission's reserve fund of about $2.3 million - if the panel approves it.
The $17 million project would build a 700-seat concert hall in what's now the university's Old Field House.
The university's music and drama departments now use the 238-seat Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall and the 250-seat University Theatre. Gearhart says a larger facility would help the campus with recruitment.
The commission's main source of revenue is half of a 2 percent tax on hotels and restaurants in Fayetteville.
