Director Oliver Stone is no stranger to controversial film or making a statement about society and interjecting his personal beliefs and conspiracy theories. His style is rough, it's raw, and it's in your face. Savages was rough at time, raw at other times but was never in your face.
Overall, I'd say that Savages was disappointing. I didn't have real high expectation from it but even then it was a letdown. It was a thriller with few tense moments. It was billed as an action movie with little action in it.
It was fine until the last 15 minutes of the film when it did a complete 180 of the story that just didn't make much sense. Nothing really changed about the 3 main characters. The journey you expected them to go on didn't really turn out and what would have made sense in terms of the narrative didn't happen either.
On the positive side, the acting was very solid and the film itself was shot and cut together nicely...in Oliver Stone's raw style.
I give Savages 6 stars out of 11.
