JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State University has named a new interim vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost.

Lynita Cooksey will take over in the role after the resignation of Dan Howard. The university says Howard decided to return to the classroom as a full-time, tenured professor of educational leadership.

Cooksey is a Jonesboro native and most recently served as associate vice chancellor for academic services. She earned her doctoral degree in entomology at Oklahoma State University and her bachelor's and master's degrees from Arkansas State.

Howard joined the university in 2008 as the executive vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost. He served as interim chancellor as the university searched for a new leader to replace then-Chancellor Robert Potts.

Howard plans to begin teaching in the spring 2013 semester.
