LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The rain that fell during the past week was welcomed by Arkansas cattle producers, but it will take plenty more in the coming weeks for the state's pastureland to once again be covered by green grass.

Ranchers have battled high temperatures and dry conditions for more than two months and many have struggled to feed their animals. Hay is expensive and in short supply and other cattle feed, such as corn, is also expensive.

Agriculture officials say producers are culling their herds of cows that are too old, too ornery or too big in an effort to keep their base herds intact.

Part of central Arkansas is in extreme drought and about 70 percent of the state is in severe drought.
