LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Walmart and its pork supplier are under scrutiny. Undercover video reveals cruelty to pigs. Today, an animal rights group shows us that video and says it's part of a nationwide campaign.
The group, Mercy for Animals, is urging Walmart to adopt new animal welfare guidelines.
Director of Education Becca Frye shared with us the video. It reveals pregnant pigs confined in gestation crates and piglets that are sick being slammed into the ground. Workers are also cutting off piglets tails and testicles.
Frye says several other companies such as McDonalds, Kmart and Whole Foods are demanding their suppliers from doing away with these gestation crates.
Mercy for Animals wants Walmart to do the same.
"What we are trying to do is ban gestation crates, which is considered the cruelest farming practices. And these pigs are kept in cages where they can't turn around or lie down comfortably," says Frye.
Christensen Farms responded saying it recently adopted a euthansia method for piglets and says the video was taken out of context and doesn't show the typical operation of its facility.
MFA is a nonprofit out of Chicago and also veganism. We reached out Walmart for a response to this video and have not heard back from representatives.
According to Christensen Farms' website, it is one of the largest pork producers in the U-S with operations in six states.
