FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - University of Arkansas Chancellor G. David Gearhart says he hopes to attract 28,000 students to the university's flagship campus in Fayetteville.

Gearhart has said he wants to increase enrollment to 25,000 as soon as possible - then "take a breath and look" at facilities before increasing the number of students.

UA Vice Provost Suzanne McCray is projecting an enrollment of about 24,700 for the fall semester that begins Aug. 20. The enrollment figure includes a freshman class of about 4,600.

The university posted a fall enrollment last year of 23,199 students that included a freshman class of 4,447.
