HOXIE, Ark. (AP) - The Hoxie School District has received a federal grant to promote physical education and nutrition in its schools.

The U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday that it's awarding 56 grants that total $27 million. Hoxie will receive more than $291,000.

The grants are funded through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program, which has handed out more than $620 million since its inception in 2001.

Grant recipients must implement programs that help students meet state standards for physical education. The programs must also offer instruction in healthy eating habits and nutrition.

The education department says the program also helps physical education teachers stay informed of the latest research and trends in their field.
