Little Rock (KTHV) - Arkansas' gay activist took to the sidewalks Wednesday in front of Chick-fil-As in support of gay rights.

"I come to support Chick-fil-A. I believe, I think that traditional marriage still is the American way," said Bishop Charles Williams of Little Rock.

This comes after the national food chain's support of Christian principles and former Governor Mike Huckabee's declaring the day Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.

"He (Chick-fil-A's COO) didn't say that he didn't love gays he just said that marriage was for a man and a woman," said Stephanie Sheets of Little Rock.

Supporters of the comments and stand taken by the restaurant's COO waited in long drive-thru lines to show support.

"We have been in line since noon and it's 1:35 now," said a driver in North Little Rock in a Chick-fil-A drive-thru line.

Drivers say the lines stretched as long as five blocks causing up to two hour waits for service.

"Free speech. I think we're entitled to free speech and this has a lot to do with it," said a driver in North Little Rock in a Chick-fil-A drive-thru line.

The restaurant issued a statement Wednesday saying in part "Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy of debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena."

The restaurant has more than 1600 locations throughout the nation which are locally owned and operated.
