LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - The trooper who pulled over an ASU football player has been fired.
Trooper Royce Denney was fired July 27. The termination stems from a traffic stop involving ASU football player Michael Dyer March 10. Dyer was only cited for speeding in the incident.
In Denney's termination letter from Col. JR Howard, director of the Arkansas State Police, Denney violated policy when he purposely turned off his in-car camera recording system, confiscating the gun found in Dyer's car without legal justification, and by not properly disposing of "potential drug evidence" found during the stop.
Howard says in the letter, "Your conduct and repeated demonstrations of lack of judgment clearly shows that you are unable to conform to the standards of professionalism that is expected of a commissioned officer of the Arkansas State Police. Accordingly, your employment is hereby terminated."
Denney has the right to appeal his termination. It must be done so in writing and returned to the Arkansas State Police Commission within ten calendar days from him getting the letter.
