FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - The family of a man who committed suicide after police identified him as a suspect in a Fort Smith killing says he was the light of their lives.
Police say Ibn Islam died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday. Earlier in the day, police said they wanted to question him in the death of Chad Whitfield.
Islam's mother, Raina Ellison, tells Fort Smith television station KHBS (http://is.gd/nne1gC) that her son was friends with Whitfield. Ellison says her heart goes out to the Whitfield family.
Officers began searching for Islam after Whitfield was found dead at a residence earlier in the day. Two women and three children were discovered hiding in the home but they weren't harmed.
