LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- It has been nearly 20 years since Little Rock police have seen this many murders in the Capital City.

July of 2012 had more homicides in one month than any other month since 1993. Some blame the heat, others just the stress of living in a bad economy, but 10 homicides were reported in July. Some of them are the result of robberies.

But Little Rock police say though the number is high, it doesn't tell the whole story.

Sgt. Cassandra Davis with the Little Rock Police Department says, "In July, we had three double homicides and those were all probably something law enforcement could not have prevented."

July's 10 homicides makes it one of the deadliest months on record for Little Rock. December of 1993 is next, as eleven homicides were recorded. That year, 70 people were killed in the Capital City compared to 28 so far this year.

Little Rock police say the circumstances the city faced nearly twenty years ago are not the same ones we're facing now.

Sgt. Davis says, "The dynamic was different. The individuals involved were young gang members, so it's totally different from what we've experienced in July. Some of these homicides occurred inside the home. They were between individuals knowing each other, so they had some type of relationship; be it a friend, or an acquaintance, or a family member."

It's a problem, police say, that has no clear cause and no clear solution.

Sgt. Davis says, "From month to month that changes, from year to year that changes. So, you can't say that it upticks at a certain time, and then it comes down. It's just varying."

Little Rock police say they are making steps to prevent violent crime, such as partnering with the ATF in a new gun-free initiative.

They say the goal is to get illegal guns, and those not authorized to have them, off the streets by imposing stricter penalties.
