JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Authorities in northeast Arkansas are investigating whether a young man fatally shot himself while he was handcuffed in the back of a patrol car.

Jonesboro Police Chief Michael Yates said Tuesday that it appears 21-year-old Chavis Carter shot himself in the head late last month, but he said his department still is looking into the incident.

Authorities say Carter was searched twice after the vehicle in which he was a passenger was stopped in Jonesboro, about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock. Officers said it appeared Carter shot himself with a concealed gun.

Police say witness statements and video and audio recordings show neither of the two officers on scene removed their weapons nor fired a shot.

Yates refused Tuesday to release those recordings, citing the ongoing investigation.
