FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Five University of Arkansas gymnasts have earned Scholastic All-America honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women, the organization has announced.
Seniors Kelci Lewis and Amanda Siebert, junior Bailee Zumwalde, and graduated seniors Jaime Pisani and Genny Salvatore earned Scholastic All-America honors for posting a year-long cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. Pisani and Salvatore tied for the best mark in the nation with perfect 4.0 GPAs for the year.
"We are committed to success in the gym, the classroom and in the community, and we take pride in the way we represent the university," co-head coach René Lyst says. "We're pleased with the girls and the hard work they put in, and they are deserving of the scholar-athlete awards."
That group helped the Razorbacks to one of the best seasons in program history. Arkansas reached the Super Six for the second time in four years, finished sixth in the nation for its fourth top 10 finish in five years, qualified for an NCAA Regional for the ninth straight year and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the sixth time.
Individually, Pisani, Zumwalde, junior Katherine Grable and sophomore Stephani Canizaro combined for eight All-America honors. Pisani was first-team in the all-around, and on floor and beam, and second-team on bars. Zumwalde and Canizaro were second-team on floor, and Grable was first-team and vault and second-team on beam.
The Razorbacks earned their first No. 1 team national ranking during the 2011 season and also earned an event No. 1 ranking on bars. Pisani was No. 1 in the country on floor for eight rankings periods and No. 1 in the all-around for four. Grable was No. 1 in the all-around for two weeks and 2011 senior Mariah Howdeshell was No. 1 on bars for three weeks.
"We have been able to build a program that is successful both athletically and academically, and we're very proud of that," co-head coach Mark Cook says. "Their dedication in the gym and in the classroom is evident, and we appreciate their efforts."
In the 10-year history of the program, Razorbacks have combined to earn 67 Scholastic All-America honors. Salvatore earned four honors and Pisani three for their careers. Lewis has been honored three times and Zumwalde twice.
