LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (LR Family) - In 2007, Arkansas was reported to have the worst teen prescription pain reliever abuse problem in the entire U.S.
Easy access and availablity are major factors in youth misuse and abuse of prescription drugs.
Little Rock Family Magazine has a special article in this month's issue on prescription drug abuse in children. THV's Alyse Eady spoke to editor Heather Bennett about this growing problem.
"What we may not think about [as parents] is that we can actually be the first drug dealer that our child comes into contact with," says Bennett. "We have these medications that we just hang onto, just sitting in our cabinets and children, even the tweens and middle schoolers, are trying these."
The Prescription Drug Take-Back Program is working to combat this by offering parents a place to safely dispose of their unused prescription medication.
The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Program event will be help Saturday, Sept 29 at War Memorial from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
