NEW YORK (CNN) -- An exhibit featuring a 13-foot tall statute of Christopher Columbus opens to the public in New York today. But you won't find it in any Manhattan museum.

Instead, the marble likeness of the Italian explorer is being displayed in an apartment above the circle that bears his name. The living room is on a scaffold more than 70-feet high.

"Discovering Columbus" is the creation of Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi.

Private donors contributed two and a half million dollars to the project.

The exhibit runs until November 18th.
