LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - A man was arrested in North Little Rock after police say he stole a Highway Department tractor.

According to Sgt. Cassandra Davis with the Little Rock Police Department, North Little Rock officers responded to a call early Wednesday near Main Street and West Pershing in reference to a blue New Holland tractor causing damage to the area.

Police say 31-year-old Christopher Mullins was arrested after officers observed him operating the tractor. He was taken into custody without incident.

Mullins told police that found the tractor in the area of I-30 and I-630, saying that he was at a party and could not get a ride home. He said he began to walk when he saw the keys to the tractor lying on the ground, so he took it as he did not want to walk home.

According to police, Mullins claimed to be a qualified tractor operator and said he would pay for any damages he caused. The tractor was marked with an Arkansas State Highway Department tag.

Police say an employee with AHTD, who says Mullins does not work for the department, responded to the scene to take possession of the tractor. The employee confirmed to police that Mullins did not have permission to take the tractor with an attached bush hog, costing around $37,000.

Mullins was charged with theft of property.
