UNDATED (CNN) -- The decision you make in college in choosing your major could end up costing you millions of dollars over your lifetime. CNN has new stats on the degrees that earn the most and the least.

Want to make $3.5 million? Major in engineering. That's how much those who graduate with an engineering degree can expect to earn over a 40-year career, according to new Census Bureau data.

Compare that to typical college grads who take home on average $2.4 million during their career.

Which major earns the least? Education, which comes in at $1.8 million. Despite the low pay, this degree is the second most popular for students.

But it's not just pay that's important, so is finding a job. The census says business majors are among the most likely to be employed...61 percent of them find work.

Computer, math and science majors have even better employment rates those majors also pay well. On the flip side, fewer than half of visual and performing arts majors are able to land full-time jobs.

Same goes for literature and language majors. But there is one common element across the board. Women tend to earn less than men in every field of degree.

Choosing a major may seem like a small decision at the time. But students should not take it lightly - in the long-run, it could have big implications in terms of earnings.
