BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) - The Benton Police Department has successfully arrested a man accused of leaving the scene of an accident and leaving his passenger behind.
Police said John Bunton, 40, was arrested and charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Assault, Leaving the Scene of an Injury Accident, Felony Fleeing, DWI, and Refusal to Submit to Arrest after he left the scene of an accident on the North Service Loop of Alcoa Rd. and I-30.
Officers said they were dispatched to the scene around 12:30 a.m. Nov. 9, and found out the driver of the motorcycle fled the scene and left the passenger behind while they were en route.
According to the Police Department, officers caught up with Bunton on Shelby Drive in the Heritage Farms subdivision, where he had a gun and threatened to harm officers and himself if he wasn't left alone.
Officers said they were able to successfully talk him out of harming anyone, and he was taken into custody without further incident.
Bunton's passenger was taken via med-flight to Baptist Hospital in Little Rock where they are in critical condition. The passenger's name is being withheld pending notification of family about the situation.
Police have not said what initially caused the accident.
Bunton is currently being held in the Saline Count Detention Facility in lieu of a $250,000 bond. This is an on-going investigation and further charges may be forthcoming.
