MINNEAPOLIS (KARE) - Police are on the scene at Target Headquarters in downtown Minneapolis after a report of shots fired late Friday morning.
Police spokesman Sergeant Steve McCarty confirms that a call of shots fired came in from the Retek building, 50 South 10th Street at 11:10 a.m. That building is part of the downtown Target campus. SWAT teams are on the scene, but there is no confirmation of an active shooter on the loose.
Reports from employees in the building seem to indicate the disturbance that launched the 911 calls occured on or near the 10th floor.
Armed officers and K-9 teams are going floor to floor looking for an armed person but so far have found nothing. Shortly before 12:30 p.m. McCarty told reporters there is no evidence yet that an actual shooting has taken place.
Target spokesperson Molly Snyder tells KARE 11 that there has been a "security incident" declared in the building and that all employees have been ordered to stay inside their offices until the situation is resolved.
Workers inside the building are tweeting that they are barricaded in their offices. Tanya Hnastchencko is hunkered down with two co-workers in an office on the 5th floor of the Retek Building. She tells KARE 11 that they received orders to barricade themselves moments after police got the original shots fired call.
Tanya's father works on the 11th floor of the Retek building. A co-worker who works on the 10th floor told him that he heard something that sounded like shots.
Dispatchers say that officers on the scene called in a code 4, which means that the situation is under control but that is not confirmed.
The 11-story building overlooks the pedestrian Nicollet Mall. It's across the street from Target's main headquarters, and last March the retailing giant signed a lease to take over all of its office space, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.
