TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) - A clerk at a Texarkana Walmart prevented a customer from wiring $5,000 to an overseas recipient after suspecting the woman was lured into a scam.
Police say the store called officers in hope that they would convince the woman that she would only lose her money if she went through with the transaction. The money wasn't sent.
The Texarkana Gazette reports that the scam involved the name of Publishers Clearing House, which has long been known for its giveaways. But the company has a page on its website that warns people that its name is often invoked by scam artists, who sometimes send official-looking letters seeking money.
The company says it never asks people to send money to claim a prize.
Police did not name the victim.
