Arkansas Surgeon General Joe Thompson
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - State Surgeon General Joe Thompson says expanding Medicaid's eligibility under the federal health care law would help Arkansas catch up with richer states that have been able to offer more coverage through their programs.
Thompson said Tuesday that expanding the program to 250,000 additional people would give the state a chance to help its poorest citizens and also save money in the long run for its health care system.
Gov. Mike Beebe supports expanding Medicaid's eligibility, but the move needs the support of three-fourths of the state House and Senate. Republican leaders in both chambers are either opposed to the expansion or reluctant to back it without reforms in exchange.
Thompson spoke about the impact of the proposed expansion at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service.
