Bret Bielema named Arkansas head football coach
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) - Arkansas Razorback fans will hear from the new head coach on Wednesday. The day after the University of Arkansas announced Bret Bielema will lead the hogs, it is hosting a press conference, where Bielema will be introduced.
Bielema, who was head football coach at the University of Wisconsin when tapped for the position, had not previously been mentioned in the coaching search for the Hogs. He had been making $2.59 million per year at Wisconsin. He had a 68-24 record during his tenure as Badger head coach. He also just won the Big Ten championship this season.
Bielema's bio on the University of Wisconsin's website shows he has coached the Badgers for seven years. Prior to that, he helped coach at Kansas State and Iowa, where he was a member of Iowa's 1990 Big Ten championship team.
UofA Athletic Director, Jeff Long, officially announced the new head coach with a press release at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. With that announcement came Bielema's first official response to his new role as Head Hog.
"I am very humbled and honored to become the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks," said Bielema. "During my conversation with Jeff (Long) he described the characteristics for the perfect fit to lead this program. It was evident we share the same mission, principles and goals. The infrastructure in place at Arkansas shows the commitment from the administration to accomplish our goals together and I am excited to begin to lead this group of student-athletes. This program will represent the state of Arkansas in a way Razorback fans everywhere will be proud of."
An offer letter from the University of Arkansas shows that Bielema was offered a six-year-contract worth $3.2 million a year. He will also receive additional perks, such as two vehicles for personal use and membership to the Fayetteville Country Club.
A press conference introuducing Bielema as the new head coach is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday in Fayetteville. TodaysTHV.com will carry that press conference live online.
