MARLIN, TX (CBS/KWTX) - A tip to a newspaper leads to a shocking discovery, the bodies of more than 20 dead animals found dumped in a local park.

At first glance, this appears to be an off limits dumping site in Marlin City Park, closer inspection reveals a much more gruesome scene. The carcasses of up to 25 dead dogs, some of them in bags, others scattered around. Mayor Elizabeth Nelson saw this site firsthand, taken there by an animal rescue worker. She says, "Well we went out there and sure enough, there were black bags, black plastic bags laying around and there were there was a number of skeletal remains that you could tell were canine remains."

Word is the city is looking into someone possibly shooting strays and discarding them in the trash bags. Mayor Nelson says, "There are allegations that some of the animals have been shot and are being dumped out there. At this point we have no physical proof of that. We are continuing an investigation."

While the find was just discovered this weekend, it appears the dumping has been going on for some time as the area is also littered with dry bones. Where they are coming from is still a mystery, but if the city discovers in their investigation any wrongdoing, charges will be filed. Nelson says, "If we find if in our investigation we find that there is evidence of animal abuse, then we will pursue that also."

It is not known when the city will attempt to cover up and bury the remains so they will not be leift to the open air.
