    Police: Gunman, Adam Lanza, forced his way into school

    NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBS/AP) - Connecticut police released more information Saturday morning about the deadly school shooting in Newtown. We now know that the shooter forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning.

    Connecticut State Police said 26 total people were killed, with 20 of them being children. We also learned that the school's principal, Dawn Hochsprung, died while lunging toward the shooter.

    The shooter is identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza. Originally, law enforcement officials told media outlets the deceased shooter was Ryan Lanza. However, Friday afternoon Adam was identified as the shooter and 24-year-old Ryan, Adam's brother, is in custody for questioning. Police said Ryan is cooperating with them and he is not under arrest.

    Lanza's mother, Nancy Lanza, was a kindergarten teacher at the school and The AP is reporting most of the children killed were in her classroom. Authorities say Lanza killed Nancy at their home, drover her car to the school, and then went on the school shooting rampage. Adam Lanza died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    The Associated Press reported more than two guns were found inside the building. An investigative official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, would not say what type of guns were found. According the the AP, two of the original weapons found after the shootings were purchased by and registered to Lanza's mother.

    The shooting occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. CBS Hartford affiliate WFSB-TV reports around 600 students attend the school in grades between kindergarten and fourth grade.
