BARTON, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Game and Fish Commission officers fatally shot a man who had used his truck to strike a state trooper near Barton in Phillips County.

Wildlife officers and Trooper Jason Martin tried to pull over 50-year-old Darryl Vance Parker of Elaine at 10:30 p.m. Friday for allegedly illegally hunting at night.

State police say Parker used his truck to strike Martin after driving into a wheat field to avoid arrest. Martin was on foot and trying to get Parker to stop. Parker allegedly knocked Martin to the ground with the vehicle.

State police say Parker tried to strike Martin a second time and that's when wildlife officers fired into his vehicle. Parker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Martin was treated at a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
