Conn. State Police conducting extensive investigation

UNDATED (Gannett) -- Connecticut State Police held a press conference at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning with the latest on the investigation into the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Friday, Adam Lanza opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut killing 20 students between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults.

A spokesman for the CSP said all of the students are excused from Sandy Hook until further notice and all teachers are meeting today at the high school.

State troopers have been assigned to work all of the funerals. Families have asked for privacy during this time.

Police has been working 24/7 and will continue to do so indefinitely as police continue to answer questions of how and why this occurred. There are many, many witnesses and police will interview every single one.

Many of the witnesses are children, and CSP says they will approach each student tenderly and appropriately with parents.

CSP says they will hold both crime scenes, the school and another location, indefinitely. This could be as long as several months. CSP says this is common practice.

Evidence is starting to be processed and analyzed by officials. CSP says every single facet of the weapons used will be examined. Volumes of rounds of ammunition were seized and every piece will be examined. There will be no discussion into the evidence and what has been found.

They will check the weaponry and search databases, every record and locations like shooting ranges to see if there were any ties to Lanza.

CSP will go into the background of the shooter, Adam Lanza, starting with birth. They will investigate every situation he has been involved in, but CSP won't go into detail what they've found so far. They will say there was no previous contact or concern with Newtown Police and Lanza.

Computer crimes unit working nonstop on evidence at any location regarding this shooting including computers, phones.

CSP says it is too difficult to actually discuss what exactly happened inside the school. They will say the suspect forced his way in. CSP didn't want to discuss it and they say it wasn't appropriate to do so at the time of the press conference. can't speculate on what could have occurred.

CSP says the faculty and staff did everything they could to protect those children. The spokesman said, "Broke our hearts when we couldn't save them all."

There were two adult survivors. They both suffered gunshot wounds and will recover. CSP says they will interview them when approved by medical professionals and they expect the witnesses will tell a great deal of insight into the crime.

CSP warned any threat, any information intended to mislead investigator will be completely investigated and in some cases prosecuted. There were several Sunday and two of them are active criminal investigations.

The next briefing will be at noon day, but the briefings will be scaled back with most happening online.
