UNDATED (CNN) -- If you're planning a visit to the Vatican city any time soon, be sure to carry lots of cash with you.

Tourists and pilgrims can now only pay by cash after card payments were blocked by Italy's central bank.

The move comes amid concerns over money laundering and a lack of financial transparency within the holy see.

The incident has affected the vatican's shops, post office and more significantly, its museums.

A notice on its website apologized for the inconvenience, citing "reasons beyond its control."
