POCAHONTAS, Ark. (AP) - There appears to be growing interest among east Arkansas farmers in planting peanuts but producers may find that prices will be lower in 2013.
Peanut processors have invested in centers in the region where growers can drop off their peanut harvests for processing.
Growers planted an estimated 18,000 acres of peanuts in the state in 2012 and that number is expected to be greater in 2013. The peanut industry is encouraging Arkansas farmers to plant the crop because of drought in Oklahoma and Texas and disease problems elsewhere in the South.
The Jonesboro Sun reports (http://is.gd/kNVvZP ) growers in 2012 netted about $700 per acre of peanuts planted, with input costs of about $500 per acre.
