LITTLE ROCK (February 1, 2013) - The Little Rock Zoo announced today that its groundhog, Maple, will forgo the traditional weather prediction for Groundhog Day and will instead do a Super Bowl prediction on Saturday, February 2, at 10:30 a.m. in Café Africa at the Zoo.
An official proclamation of Maple's predication will be read by Mayor Mark Stodola immediately following Maple's predication.
"Any groundhog can do a weather prediction. What takes true talent is the ability to properly predict the outcome of the Super Bowl," said Zoo Director Mike Blakely.
Maple's keepers say that the groundhog has been studying-up intently over the past few weeks in preparation for this very important prediction.
"Maple has been watching a lot of ESPN the last few weeks and has studied stats on players for both teams," said Hannah Baker, Maple's keeper.
Zoo staff say that Maple has been impressed with the passing ability of San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick but also thinks that Baltimore Ravens Wide Receiver Torrey Smith could be a huge "X" factor in the game.
Maple will make her prediction at 10:30 a.m. in Café Africa this Saturday. The public is invited to attend.
