LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - A traffic stop had turned into a water rescue for a police officer and a suspect.

Little Rock police say an officer was trying to pull over a car in the Rebsamen Park/Murray Park area along Riverfront Drive, but the driver wouldn't stop and started driving in circles and eventually drove into the Arkansas River.

Several officers dove into the water to help him out of the car and they managed to get to a small island in the river.

Water rescue boats were sent to the scene and both the officer and the suspect were rescued from the island. The suspect is now in custody.

The suspect told police that he drove into the river because he was trying to kill himself, and that he was planning to do it before he was being pulled over.

The suspect will be held in the hospital for 72 hours due to his suicidal actions.
