SAN ANTONIO, TX (CBS/KENS) -- He has been called a "serial burglar" and now the is off the streets because of a San Antonio couple. Their gripping confrontation has gone around the world on video.
The couple held him at gunpoint until police arrived. The couple says they were terrorized for about a month. The video from their surveillance camera has placed them front and center in the debate over gun control.
Paul Cavazos has owned this shotgun a decade. He used it on Jan. 11, he says to protect his neighbor's property. Paul spotted Gilbert Nunez with his neighbors TV in hand. Cavazos says, "It happened so quickly it was the last thing we had expected that day. But I think the most important thing is that we finally got some peace of mind."
Paul's girlfriend, Heidi, first came face-to-face with Nunez in mid-December on their front lawn. She says Nunez had her dog with him. The couple says they later realized, Nunez had been in their home and swiped a laptop. He says, "We never thought we'd see this person again after putting up signs and security cameras."
Eight days later, Nunez returned. They say they saw him with a neighbor's TV, but he got away, before they could call police. fast-forward to Jan. 11. As Paul is walking out of his home his girlfriend races inside to tell him nunez is back and he's got another t-v in his hands. Heidi says, "He got the message and if we hadn't had the gun what probably would have happened is he would have laughed at us and run off with the TV."
The couple says San Antonio police were on the scene within three minutes, adding that, without the gun, the suspect would have likely been gone. Nunez is charged with two counts of burglary. Bexar County records show police have arrested him 12 times in the past.
