MALVERN, Ark. (KTHV) - The driver of a truck was airlifted to a Little Rock Hospital after his vehicle was pushed over the guard rail of an overpass.

Public information officer Bill Sadler said William Almond, of Hot Springs, reportedly tried to merge into eastbound traffic after stopping along the highway shoulder, but while he was pulling out, his trailer was struck by a tractor-trailer truck driven by Ronnie Watson of Sherman, Texas.

Almond was driving a large pickup truck and pulling a trailer loaded with construction equipment.

Sadler said the impact pushed Almond's truck and trailer along the guardrail of an overpass, then off the roadway, dropping approximately 40 feet onto an embankment below the bridge.

Almond was pinned in the wreckage, and he was eventually freed from the crash and airlifted to a Little Rock hospital. At this hour, said Sadler, Almond's condition is unknown.

Capt. Shawn Garner with Arkansas State Police said the accident happened about 2:45 p.m. at mile marker 83 near Malvern. Eastbound lanes of Interstate 30 west of Malvern were closed to traffic, but they were reopened shortly before 6 p.m.

Traffic traveling east was backed up for miles and being diverted at exit 83 for Friendship.
