LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Some of Arkansas' finest authors say they can't emphasize enough the importance of reading and writing on an advanced level.

African American authors gathered with the community Saturday to focus on just that.

It's all part of Black History month. The organizers of the event at Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock say literacy, reading and writing can be used as a weapon to fight violent crimes in urban areas.

Literary consultant Patrick Oliver says advanced literacy is so important now more than ever.

Oliver says the authors present at Arkansas Baptist have written numerous books on history and culture.
