PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) -- The Pines Mall has seen some positive turnaround in the past year.
General Manager Scott Green says the mall's goal was to open three new stores in 2012. They opened six - all of which are locally owned.
The businesses have benefited in a big way.
"I have a strong feeling that the mall is gonna come back. I can see it," says Joyce, who owns a gold-buying business in the mall. "It's gonna take time, but it'll come back. You have to have faith."
"This past Christmas was the best holiday season in years," says Green.
It's been a challenge to attract new businesses to the area, but it's one Green says he loves taking on.
"Sometimes the perception is the mall is just dead. It's not," says Green. "It's alive. Come out here on a weekend and you will see."
One of the ways they've expanded is by making the space available for leasing more affordable. They also invite community organizations, ministries and non-profits to hold events at no cost.
"It's not just about revitalizing the mall," says Green. "This mall is for the community and the surrounding area. We need this mall to succeed for us."
