NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - An I-40 overpass remains closed after a tractor trailer wrecked on Thursday near the Crystal Hill exit.
While workers continue to assess and repair the Young Road Overpass and I-40, Highway Department officials said this could just be the beginning. Crews worked long hours over the last couple of days to make the roads passable, but Highway officials told THV 11 that a long term fix may be necessary.
"We're going to make the interim repairs that we need to make right now to make the roadways safe," said Highway Department Spokesman, Randy Ort.
The Young Road Bridge remains closed, but the Highway department said it could open sometime Saturday.
The main spot of concern is the column struck by the 18-wheeler. Ort said they don't know whether the temporary fix will be able to sustain the structure in the long run.
"There's pretty extensive damage to the Young Road overpass. Also, [to] two of the driving lanes of the pavement on interstate 40," added Ort.
Not only did the high speed collision damage the bridge, Ort said heat also played a factor.
"The fire that was created yesterday can cause damage to the concrete, to the reinforcing steel, to the structural steel; to the bridge deck--all those things were damaged yesterday. From that standpoint we still have a lot of work to do," said Ort.
