UNDATED (CNN) -- New York City is saying goodbye to a beloved primate.
The Bronx Zoo says Pattycake, the first gorilla born in the Big Apple, died on Sunday, at the age of 40.
Zoo officials say the median lifespan for gorillas in zoos is 37 years.
Pattycake was under medical care for chronic cardiac issues when she died.
The zoo says millions of the New York City's kids grew up with Pattycake.
She was born on September 3rd, 19-72 at the Central Park Zoo and was transferred to the Bronx Zoo a decade later.
She had 10 offspring, including twins.
