LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- The weekend is shaping up to be a perfect one to finally get started on your spring garden. For many of us, that means cleaning up weeds, but how do you keep the weeds out of your garden during the spring and summer?

You can prevent it by simply applying pre-emerge to your flower beds. I know what you are thinking -- so many of us apply pre-emerge to our lawns, but we forget about our flower beds.

You can do this with great products on the market. Lots of different brands are available, but what kind you can get depends on what state you live in.

Make sure whenever you are looking for a pre-emerge that you read the directions very carefully. For example, some have a plant food mixed in with them, so you've got two great things in one. You are not only killing your weeds or keeping your weeds from germinating with a product like that, but you are also fertilizing your healthy landscape plants.

There are some also designed for veggie gardens, so they will not contaminate your soil or your
    food.

Make sure you get into the areas that are usually the worst with weeds, and before you know it, your weeds will never be able to germinate.

You do, however, have to remember one thing. I don't want you to get mad at me, but if Zoysia or Bermuda is already rooted in your flower bed, a pre-emerge does not kill those existing weeds. That's why you would have to use something like Roundup.
