FAULKNER COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - Faulkner County is mourning the loss of Deputy Sheriff Hans Fifer.

"He was a gentle person. He was very humble, (A) very humble spirit.  He was loved by his peers and loved by a lot of people," said Faulkner County Sheriff Andy Shock.

Fifer, 32, leaves behind a wife and two daughters ages three and five.

"His family is obviously grief-stricken but they are holding up very well," said Sheriff Shock.

Sheriff Shock said Deputy Hans collapsed following Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T) tryouts.

Sheriff Shock said it is believed Deputy Hans suffered a "cardiac event."

The tryouts took place at the Direct Action Resource Center in North Little Rock.

An incident report said a S.W.A.T medic attempted to provide Deputy Fifer with oxygen which he said Deputy Fifer refused. The incident report said Deputy Fifer stood up at one point and then collapsed to the ground.

"The S.W.A.T tryouts are grueling, consisting of running, jumping climbing hills, crawling, (and) shooting.  It's a high stress situation," said Sheriff Shock.

Sheriff Shock said he believes Fifer may have had a health problem which he was not aware of.

"Anytime a person is considered for law enforcement they have to pass a full physical," said Sheriff Shock.

Sheriff Shock released the following statement: "(Fifer) is an example of what every policeman in this country should strive for. He was a very humble and polite person that had the true heart of a public servant."

"He luckily had the opportunity to visit with his parents and had a long visit with them Sunday night and was talking about how excited he was about the S.W.A.T. team," said Sheriff Shock.

The sheriff said Fifer's dream will be realized even after death.

"He passed the exercise to join the S.W.A.T team and when he is laid to rest he will have a S.W.A.T. team patch on his uniform," said Sheriff Shock
