LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- LRSD students and faculty are eagerly preparing for the third annual Artistry in the Rock (AITR), April 28-30, to showcase the many creative talents our district has to offer during three days of dramatic and musical performances and a visual arts exhibition.
The event has been expanded one day to include a jazz reception for adults featuring a LRSD Faculty Jazz Ensemble and a Jazz Trio on April 30.
AITR will be held at the Metroplex Event Center, 10800 Colonel Glenn Road in Little Rock, and is designed to celebrate the extraordinary artistic accomplishments of LRSD students in grades K-12. The event also promotes LRSD's fine arts program which research shows to be critical for student achievement.
Students who are involved in fine arts programs show academic success in other areas:
• Fine arts students outscore their peers in the SAT
• Reading, writing and math scores improve when fine arts are included in a student's curriculum
• One in three of today's school-aged children will hold an arts-related job at some time in his/her career
In addition to student exhibits, there will be a silent auction of faculty artwork to benefit the district's fine arts program and a newly established scholarship fund.
The Artistry in the Rock committee is expanding the activity to two school days with art-related activities for elementary students and performances by varying students on Monday AND Tuesday. We are also adding a Tuesday evening, reception and performance by our art and music teachers, including silent auction and musical performance from faculty. Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit a newly established scholarship fund and money for Arts in the schools -which will be determined later.
The expanded evening program on Tuesday includes performances by the Transportation Choir, Recorders in the Rock, Muzed with I.J. Routen and Jazz "R" Us with Danny Fletcher. The dates for Artistry in the Rock: April 28-30th.
